Low Toxicity Silicone Adhesive

See for yourself why KWIK-SIL silicone adhesive is so popular for life science applications. When you are looking for a low toxicity adhesive with some elasticity and good moisture resistance, a silicone adhesive is the option of choice. When used with living tissue, an adhesive must be:

  • Non-toxic
  • Fast Curing
  • Able to adhere to organic and inorganic surfaces

Kwik-Sil™ and Kwik-Cast™ silicone adhesives have very low toxicity before, during and after curing. The by-product of curing is a small amount of hydrogen gas, which is much less toxic to cells than acetic acid or alcohol from traditional RTV silicones.

Kwik-Sil™ and Kwik-Cast™ have a curing speed that is hundreds of times faster than traditional RTV silicones. A curing time of a few minutes at room temperature is especially useful for encapsulation of live tissue or implanting into a live animal.

Kwik-Sil™ and Kwik-Cast™  surgical adhesives are not sensitive to contamination from animal tissue, unlike many vinyl-based silicones in which the platinum complex catalysts which are easily poisoned by contamination from amines and animal tissue.

Kwik-Sil™ vs Kwik-Cast™

Both Kwik-Sil and Kwik-Cast are silicone adhesives, but they are a little different.

Kwik-Sil™ is a translucent, medium-viscosity silicone adhesive, developed for chronic peripheral nerve studies such as anterograde tracing with fluorescent indicators or electrode recording. Good adhesion and mechanical properties (tear strength and elongation) allow days of study without breaking of the bonding. Curing speed is very reproducible.

Kwik-Cast™ is a very low viscosity silicone sealant developed to embed peripheral nerves with electrodes for acute multi-fiber recordings. It flows easily, filling the small spaces around the nerve and leaving no channels through which peritoneal fluid can travel and thus short the nerve/electrode contact. Equally important is the ability of the material to flow into itself and create one continuous mass from underneath the nerve all the way to the top of the nerve/electrode contact to ensure long-term recording stability. Kwik-Cast is color-coded to make the mixing foolproof. The catalyst is yellow and the base is blue. When uniformly mixed, it is green. Kwik-Cast can be applied and cured underneath mineral oil. After recording, electrodes are easily recovered due to the low tear strength. The slight longer curing time (approx. 3 minutes) makes it more suitable for stationary preparations and in vitro tissue studies.

Kwik-Sil™ Properties

The properties of this bio-compatible surgical adhesive make it exceptionally useful for neuroscience applications, peripheral nerve studies and similar biomedical applications. These  silicone elastomers also eliminate the mess and time involved in pre-mixing other commonly used formulations (such as Wacker SilGel® and Sylgard®). Each silicone elastomer is packaged in a double barrel syringe and is automatically mixed when pressed out of the mixer tip provided. It can then be applied directly to the tissue without further mixing. The curing time of these silicone adhesives is short, reliable and reproducible. This eliminates potential costly guesswork when using other tissue adhesives. The curing process does not produce any heat, which can cause tissue damage. WPI's silicone elastomers are much less toxic than dental silicone, because they contain no surfactant additives.

The silicone adhesive inside the syringes cannot be sterilized by any means including UV, gamma, H2O2, autoclaving or EtO.
The exterior and the tips can be immersed in or wiped with 70/30 alcohol or you can use a liquid sterilant like Cidex OPA (WPI P/N 7364-4) or Rapicide OPA (WPI P/N 504611).

Kwik-Sil™ New Tip Design

Kwik-Sil™ and Kwik-Cast™ now come with a new tip design. The new tip is engineered to minimize leakage.

Kwik-Sil™ Applications

Kwik-Sil™ silicones are based on technology with vinyl terminated siloxane and platinum complex catalysts. In order to cure at room temperature, special cross linkers and high catalyst concentration are used. Although the high concentration of catalysts makes these products more costly than traditional RTV silicones and less attractive for general usage, they provide an excellent value in applications for the biological research field.

Built for people who love nugget ice!
Color: Piano Black
If you love nugget ice, this machine delivers exactly what you’re hoping for - soft, chewable, restaurant-quality pellet ice at home, consistently and quickly. The biggest differentiator is speed and volume. It produces up to 35 lbs per day, and the first batch is ready fast. The ice texture is true crushed pebble/nugget style - not hard cubes disguised as “pellet” ice. It’s ideal for iced coffee, sparkling water, cocktails, and entertaining. The stainless steel exterior feels premium and modern on the countertop. Noise level is typical for a countertop ice maker, noticeable but not disruptive. It’s not silent, but it’s absolutely reasonable for the output.

Short life span
Color: Piano Black
We really liked this ice maker. The good-the water reservoir and ice basket are larger than in our last one, so we only refilled this one maybe once a day (family of 4). The ice didn't build up on the side and trigger the ice maker full shut off like our previous one. It is quieter than our last one too, and seemed to make ice just as fast. The bad-it doesn't turn itself back on as the ice melts and refills the water reservoir. The really bad-we've only used distilled and RO water in it. We've been fighting with it for a couple of months now to get it to make ice. We've cleaned it over and over with the cleaning solution. We also cleaned the vents as suggested with a vacuum and compressed air. It's to the point that it literally makes 2 ice cubes every time we start it, and that's it. We bought it 6 months, and we're giving up on it. We'll try another brand.

Almost Perfect
Color: Piano Black
Came from another ice maker and I miss two things: 1) size. This unit is tiny. It might be good if it’s just for you and maybe one other person, but for a family of four where everyone uses ice for their drinks and water bottles around the clock, this was constantly empty and needing more water. 2) the ability to start making ice on its own after there’s enough water. It has a sensor to tell you when it’s full of ice and it has a sensor to tell you when the water level is low, but it doesn’t have a sensor to tell it when the water has been refilled. You have to push the “ice making” button twice to get it to restart. Not a huge problem, but if you’re like me and leave your ice machine on 24hrs a day, you could come back to an empty ice machine after the ice in the basket melts. With my old ice maker, the machine would sense the water was low and stop. But then all the ice that was already made and in the basket would melt and fill the reservoir again and the machine would sense that and start back up on making a new batch small gripes, I know. Overall, it’s a nice, cute little ice maker and my kids love nugget ice.

Compact, lightweight, and useful milk frother.
I ordered the Electric Handheld Milk Frother in the Starlight Black color. I don’t drink coffee, let alone fancy coffees where I would normally need a milk frother, so I bought this for one reason and one reason only: scrambled eggs. I make a ton of scrambled eggs. Now, I can whisk eggs by hand just as well as the next person, and I’m not entirely convinced a frother whips them better than I can, but regular whisks take up a ton of room in my drawers and this does not. I really just wanted something compact that could whip my eggs into a nice frothy consistency without taking up much space. Even better, this one looks nice enough to just leave sitting on the counter where I can grab it easily. I will note that although I can hand whisk easily enough, there are many people who cannot due to arthritis or other issues, and this whisk is a brilliant tool for them. If you actually want to use a frother for other things, this one does perform very well. It has three speeds and comes with three different attachments: a spring whisk for latte and cappuccino foam, a balloon whisk for eggs and cream, and a hook whisk for blending protein powders or mixes without lumps. I actually ended up using the hook whisk while making pot roast. I mixed the seasoning packet with water using this frother and it blended everything perfectly with no lumps at all. The frother itself is lightweight, pretty quiet, and very easy to clean. The attachments detach easily and just need a quick rinse under soapy water. It also comes with a magnetic wireless charging dock that uses the included USB-C cable. The docking connection is simple and secure, and charging has been completely hassle-free so far. The LED display shows battery levels at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, which is useful for knowing when it needs to be charged. Overall, it’s a simple, convenient kitchen gadget that does exactly what I wanted it to do and I am quite satisfied with it.
