Na hun succesvolle samenwerking in William Shakespeares Venus en Adonis besloten Hafid Bouazza en Marlene Dumas de handen opnieuw ineen te slaan. Ditmaal zou hij de vijftig prozagedichten vertalen die Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867) verzamelde in Le Spleen de Paris, en zij zou zijn vertaling illustreren. Op 29 april 2021 stierf Hafid Bouazza. Marlene Dumas maakte schilderijen en tekeningen bij de twintig prozagedichten waarvan hij de vertaling voltooide. Ze liet zich inspireren door de sfeer van de tekst en de specifieke klankkleur van Bouazza. Zo werd het boek een postume ode aan hun vriendschap. Charles Baudelaire wordt beschouwd als de dichter van het spleen, een zwaarmoedigheid, een intense verveling die tot weltschmerz leidt. In Le Spleen de Paris schetst hij portretten van rouwende weduwen, afgewezen minnaars, mensen die vechten tegen het donker om hen heen en in zichzelf. Wie deze magnifieke bundel leest, beseft dat Les Fleurs du mal ten onrechte grotere bekendheid geniet. Het Franse origineel is in Parijse walging geheel opgenomen, evenals een Engelse vertaling van de hand van Louise Varèse. Het hart van het boek wordt gevormd door de twintig door Marlene Dumas geïllustreerde vertalingen van Hafid Bouazza.
