Queen of the Meadow - Survival of the Unfittest (12" Vinyl-Album)For four years now, Queen of the Meadow has been enchanting us with their delicate folk songs which have often been compared with the works of Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan, Elliott Smith or Judee Sill. But it is high time we move away from those tutelary figures to recognize the fair value of the acoustic cathedrals erected by the discreet yet passionate duettists, as well as acknowledge the almost child like joy experienced while hearing them sing in

For four years now, Queen of the Meadow has been enchanting us with their delicate folk songs which have often been compared with the works of Nick Drake, Vashti Bunyan, Elliott Smith or Judee Sill. But it is high time we move away from those tutelary figures to recognize the fair value of the acoustic cathedrals erected by the discreet yet passionate duettists, as well as acknowledge the almost child-like joy experienced while hearing them sing in harmony.
Helen Ferguson is a late bloomer who started writing a few years ago, driven by a profound impulse to depict her inner demons through radiant melodies.
On the other hand, Julien Pras has been known for almost 25 years as one of the defest craftsmen when it comes to sensitive song writing. Together, they adorn the finest fabric the songs that she prefers to compose in her native language. They overstitch the instruments, the sound of which he meticulously works on until a refined and elegant gown is obtained, meant to stand the test of time. The challenge was successfully met from the beginning with their debut album Aligned With Juniper (Tiny Room Rds, 2016) and more particularly with A Room to Store Happiness released in 2018 on Only Lovers Records which allowed them to tour and win the hearts of a wider audience beyond the scope of their original hometown Bordeaux, France.
All the subtleties of the 10 songs of their third album Survival of the Unfittest resulting from an asserted maturity and the obvious complicity of the duo, cannot be translated here. But right from the very first song "Smother", we are charmed by the agile intertwining of the guitars, the flight of vocals gliding above the clouds dripping crystalline notes of piano, the aptness of the rythmic beats paving the space until a tidal wave of panting voices bring the song to its climax to finally end in a peaceful acoustic arpeggio.
From a few dark-red drops in the snow, Helen observes, imagines, builds connections with the blood shed by wild animals driven out of their territories ("La Louve"), the fear aroused by the heavy step of a familiar man one does not dare rebuff ("One More Chance"), the tormenting hunger on the path of exodus ("Rose of Sharon") or the irreversible power of an electroshock ("Dishonorable Discharge").
Thereby, the title Survival of the Unfittest was inspired by biologist Hebert Spencer's expression referring to the natural selection which condemns the ones who were not born with the same chances to remain at the bottom of the ladder. But if we dig a little deeper into Helen's lyrics, we see that she expands the definition to all marginals and other whipping boys. Or if we dare say « whipping girls » since women are another claimed source of inspiration : women who fight in their own ways to be heard and respected. Womanhood is explored through the themes of reverie ("Moonchild"), violence ("Princess Pride"), manipulation ("The King and the Hoe"), sensuality ("Modesta") or dancing (illustrated by the superimposition of the collodion photograph on the cover). Adopting an intimate point of view, Helen does not hesitate to call her
own family at the witness stand to reconcile substance and form in an ode to the strength of intergenerational bonds ("Honey"). And when the lyrics reveal too little, the sound effects chosen by Julien take over, drawing the missing words, building enchanting or menacing worlds but never imposing any unilateral interpretation.
Survival of the Unfittest is a new stone in Queen of the Meadow's Garden of Delights which will hopefully serve as a talisman to repel depression and light the path for those who will have the curiosity to visit it.

Nice read about familial relationships, grief, and romance.
Loved this book - quick, cute, easy read. Stories about handling grief can sometimes be overwhelming or triggering but this was well done and speaks to all ranges of mother daughter relationships.

Second chance romance
Format: Audiobook
I have loved every single book that Jenn McKinlay has written - so I was delighted to get a chance to read this one early. Julia returns to her childhood home with her two sisters, when her mother Babs gets sick. Julia and her Mom have been almost estranged in recent years, and her mother doesn't seem very glad to have her home. When her mom passes away, the terms of her will reveal some family secrets, and some strings attached to the sisters and how they need to live, before they can inherit moms home and money. Cousin Paisley is hanging in the wings hoping to grab what the sisters should be getting. While home, Julia tries to rekindle her romance with boy-next-door Liam, the guy she had been dating when she upped and left without a word many years ago. We follow Julia and her sisters as they rebuild their relationships, and grieve the loss of their mother. I liked the premise, and really hoped to like the book. Unfortunately this one just wasn't for me. Julia and Liam are just nasty to each other, and most of their issues could be solved with some simple communication. The descriptions of some of the other characters bordered on the mean rather than funny snarky. It seemed that most of the characters were using each other. I listened to the audiobook and have nothing but praise for the narrator, who handled all the different voices really well and kept me interested in following the plot. I hope this was just a blip from this author - as I am really looking forward to her next novel!

Glowing Review
Color: 8 Oz Browning Lotion w/ Body Tanning Brush
I am OBSESSED with this tanning lotion! 😍 Maui Tanning Lotion is hands down the best bronzing product I've ever used. From the moment I opened the bottle, the tropical scent transported me straight to the beaches of Hawaii. It smells like sunshine, coconuts, and pure island bliss! The formula is ultra-smooth and applies like a dream—no streaks, no weird orange tint, just a flawless, deep golden tan that looks like I spent a week basking under the Maui sun. 🌞 The hydration is next-level too. My skin feels soft, nourished, and glowy for days after using it. It’s packed with skin-loving ingredients that make you feel like you’re treating your skin while getting bronzed. Within just one use, I noticed a rich, natural-looking tan developing. It builds beautifully and doesn’t leave behind any sticky residue. Whether you're prepping for a beach trip or just want that sun-kissed goddess glow year-round, Maui Tanning Lotion is IT. 💯 Worth every penny. I'm never going back to anything else! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 10/10 – Take me back to Maui... every time I use this product!

Instant Tan and Beautiful Glow — Just Apply Carefully! 🌴✨
Color: 8 Oz Browning Lotion w/ Body Tanning Brush
I really love this Maui Babe Browning Lotion! It gives you a noticeably darker, sun-kissed tan after just one use it truly works fast. The color payoff is beautiful, and it leaves your skin looking radiant and glowing. The only thing to be careful about is that if it gets on your hands, clothes, or bathing suit, it can leave a mark. I recommend applying it carefully and washing your hands right after. I’ve purchased this twice already because I love the results. Definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a quick, natural-looking tan!
